North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy Group (NAPA)

The North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy Group (NAPA) is a market-led approach to improve pelagic fisheries management. It was formed in response to the continuing dispute between the Coastal States over mackerel quota allocation in the North East Atlantic. NAPA aims to drive sustainability in fisheries and calls for urgent action to establish science-based management of fish stocks for future generations.

ALDI joined the North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy Group in 2021 to advocate for an effective international agreement. The coastal states of the Northeast Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) must comply with scientifically recommended catch levels and establish a long-term, science-based management plan for mackerel and herring. The ALDI SÜD Group and ALDI Nord have set a goal to source 100% of their own-brand seafood products from responsibly managed fisheries and farms.

NAPA has established the Northeast Atlantic Ocean Mackerel and Herring – Hook & Line, Trawl, and Purse Seine Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP). These projects serve to drive political will for sustainable management while holding key actors and decision-makers to account. ALDI is participating in the FIP and also calls on business partners and their networks to join NAPA.

In April 2025, NAPA was recognised as the top seafood lobbying association in a report assessing the global seafood industry’s lobbying efforts, by the NGO InfluenceMap.
