Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organisation that enables companies and financial institutions around the world to play their part in tackling the climate crisis. SBTi is an independent charity that was originally founded as a collaboration between the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). They develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set GHG emissions reduction targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net zero by 2050 at the latest.

Topics

In 2020, ALDI SÜD Group set science-based, SBTi-validated near-term emissions reduction targets covering Scope 1 and 2 emissions, as well as supplier engagement. In 2024, we updated these targets to become one of the first global food retailers to set science-based net-zero targets across our entire value chain by 2050, as validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The ALDI SÜD Group’s targets use the SBTi Corporate Net Zero Standard and the SBTi Forest, Land and Agriculture Guidance. The SBTi has assessed and validated the ALDI SÜD Group's new emissions reduction targets following a comprehensive review.
