Responsibly sourced fish and seafood is a major concern for the ALDI SÜD Group and therefore ALDI calls on the Central Pacific Fisheries Commission to implement the required measures to preserve the MSC certification for the tuna fisheries in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.
In 2021, the ALDI SÜD Group became a partner of the Global Tuna Alliance (GTA) to support the sustainable development of tuna supply chains and to ensure that the tuna we source meets our high environmental and social standards.
Currently, 30 tuna fisheries in the Western Central Pacific (WCP) are either Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified or in full MSC assessment, this represents over two million tonnes of WCP Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) tuna each year. However, If the fisheries are not managed properly, there is a high risk that the existing tuna stocks disappear and some or all fisheries will lose their MSC certification.
ALDI SÜD Group's goal is to end overfishing, bycatch and ecosystem damage by 2030. Therefore, we are reaching out to the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) decision maker to accelerate actions on the development of comprehensive harvest strategies.
